The Mar Bar is a hidden gem nestled on the scenic canal at 90775 Old Hwy, Tavernier, FL. This cozy, waterfront bar offers an authentic Keys experience that perfectly balances laid-back vibes with fresh, impeccably sourced seafood. Known primarily as a seafood lover’s haven, The Mar Bar delights guests with its raw bar specialties and a curated selection of beers, wines, and refreshing mimosas.
Walking into The Mar Bar, you’re instantly drawn to the relaxed atmosphere—casual yet inviting, with friendly staff who make you feel like a regular from the moment you arrive. The location, right on the water, enhances the experience, allowing you to enjoy your meal while watching parrot fish swim lazily by or even spot manatees, as one happy visitor shared.
Seafood here is the shining star, with menu highlights like massive, succulent Stone Crab Claws cracked to perfection and served with tangy mustard sauce, fresh Oysters on the Half Shell that taste of clean ocean breezes, and vibrant Shrimp Ceviche accompanied by crisp tortilla chips. The Paella Mixta brings a hearty, satisfying option that captures the spirit of coastal cuisine. For something truly unique, Mariela’s Smoked Fish Dip—served with crackers or chips—is a smoky, creamy delight that you won’t find just anywhere.
Customers rave about the freshness of the seafood, a result of The Mar Bar’s connection to a nearby seafood distributor and market. This proximity means that every bite bursts with ocean freshness. Kim Etheridge perfectly sums it up, praising the “huge Stone Crabs and clean Oysters” alongside the “nice friendly Beer and Wine Bar” atmosphere.
The unique combination of fresh seafood, friendly service—as noted by multiple guests including the shoutout to Lola from LAW Graphics—and a chill waterside environment makes The Mar Bar more than just a place to eat; it’s a memorable Keys experience. Prices are delightfully reasonable too, with stone crab claws offered at just $3 each, encouraging a delicious feast as Jim Scantlin fondly recalls eating twenty claws in one visit.
While The Mar Bar focuses on beer and wine rather than a full cocktail menu, visitors find this suits the easygoing vibe perfectly, complementing the flavors of the sea without distraction. The occasional live music adds to the fun, enhancing the waterfront ambiance and providing a laid-back soundtrack to your meal.
If you’re looking for a relaxed spot to unwind with exceptional seafood, friendly faces, and a view of the tranquil Keys waters, The Mar Bar is the kind of place you’ll want to return to again and again. Whether it’s your first visit or a tradition in the making, savoring the smoky dips, fresh stone crabs, and oysters while soaking in the natural beauty is an experience that lingers long after the last bite.
The Stone Crabs and Oyster were Perfect. Huge Stone Crabs and Clean Oysters. Nice friendly Beer and Wine Bar. Good table service. Water dining always a plus.
What a gem. Little off the beaten path restaurant. Super friendly owners. Lola was great! Boat right up. They are attached to a seafood distributor and market so it’s a fresh as it gets! Great music. Fun vibes. Beer, wine and seltzers. Homemade fish dip is different than the rest. OYSTERS! Raw only. It’s next to a cool paddle board/dive shop type place that shouldn’t be missed either. This is a locals place that should get more attention. Weekend lunch only. So don’t go for lunch during weekdays. Love the experience.
Love this spot. Cool to chill out and relax by the canal. Love my frozen rose, perfect to cool off in Dec. Got some Stone Crab Claws $3/each medium size. So Fresh bc it came from next door! My puppy is having a good time too :) We saw 2 manatees!!
Cute little hidden spot off the highway and right on the canal! We only stopped in for a beer, but the vibe was super chill and we watched some parrot fish swimming around while we hung out. We'll stop here on our next Keys trip so we can check out the menu.
This was a fun place. It’s hard to beat $4 each stone crab claws. We probably ate 20! Delish! We also had the ceviche and the smoked fish dip. Yum. They only serve wine and beer but not a huge problem for us. A little live music was an extra treat. Service was good.
Oysters were great. The downside was they only had limes, which was odd to put on oysters but I actually ended up liking it (not the same as lemon though). The conch fritters were very good and had nice chunks of conch in them. The stone crab had awesome flavor. Cool spot.
We went for oyster but were told there was an oyster shortage by the server lol! Anyway the stone crab and shrimp ceviche as great! The young lady behind the bar was a great sever. A beautiful location along a canal marina.
Can't come the keys without stopping here. Fresh seafood and good drinks. Nice chill spot to hang out. It feels like you've known the staff for years.
